Swim at This Iconic Natural Swimming Hole in West Virginia for the Ultimate Outdoor Fun

It’s my favorite time of year, y’all! The days are getting longer, the temperatures are warming up, and soon, we’ll be spending our time splashing the day away at a nearby swimming spot. There are plenty of swimming holes in West Virginia that are ideal for a summer day, and many of them are in our beautiful state parks. Audra State Park is one spot where you can find a natural swimming hole, and it’s one of the best. Let’s check it out:

The Middle Fork River cuts through Audra State Park, creating not only a fabulous swimming hole but also a picturesque backdrop for photos! There are plenty of hiking trails here that will lead you through the heavily wooded area. One of my favorites is the Alum Cave Trail. The boardwalk that takes you under the rock overhang of the cliff is picture-perfect from start to finish. There are also a few spots along this trail where you can get access to the river.

It’s also fabulous in the fall when the leaves are changing! But we’re not here to talk about the fall foliage. We’ve got to get through spring and summer first!

Audra State Park has several swimming spots, but you’ll want to pick a spot away from rapids and rushing water. Don’t ever underestimate the power of water! Locals love the swimming hole under the bridge, but there’s also a central swimming hole where you’re likely to find others enjoying the refreshing water. 

Several large rocks pepper the river, which are great for sunbathing between splashing around. The water can be pretty cold, but it feels great after a long hike. Speaking of rocks, they can be slippery! Wear water shoes or sneakers to give you an extra grip on slick surfaces. 

I absolutely love natural swimming areas. There’s something so grounding about swimming in a river surrounded by vibrant green trees and the sounds of songbirds above you. Plus, Audra State Park is known for its beautiful summer wildflowers, which add a lovely pop of color everywhere you look. I’d recommend bringing a pool noodle or a tube so you can float effortlessly in Mother Nature’s playground. It’s a game changer!
