In fact, I recently had the pleasure of visiting this, one of the most remote West Virginia state parks, and it was exactly the peaceful, quiet, nature-filled experience I was hoping for!

Lost River State Park, located in Hardy County, is situated on a ridge between the Lost River Valley and the George Washington National Forest. The journey to reach this hidden gem is an adventure in itself, with winding roads leading to picturesque vistas at every turn, all the way up to entering the park.

I think it's one of the best state parks in West Virginia.

Originally developed in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), Lost River State Park offers a stunning specimen of the era's carefully crafted stonework alongside rustic log cabins and lodges that blend harmoniously with the natural surroundings.

With over 3,700 acres of pristine wilderness to explore, Lost River State Park offers a plethora of activities for nature enthusiasts of all ages. Hiking enthusiasts have plenty to pick from, with various trails of varying difficulty that meander through forests and ascend to stunning vistas.

In fact, the picturesque Cranny Crow overlook is one of the park's standout features, both because of the perch's scenic views of five counties and because of its picturesque and historic stone shelter.

When I visited, I also enjoyed exploring the quiet meadow that houses the Lee House and the nearby Lee Sulphur Spring.

After a day filled with exploration and soaking in the park's natural wonders, Lost River State Park offers a range of accommodation options. Whether you prefer camping under the starry skies or renting a luxury or pioneer cabin, you're guaranteed a rewarding stay.

The night I spent in a classic pioneer cabin, I thoroughly enjoyed falling asleep to the sound of a whippoorwill perched just outside my door.

There's much to be said for the simple and largely untouched beauty that Lost River State Park preserves. It serves as a reminder that in our modern world, there are still pockets of wild forest waiting to be discovered, where time slows down and nature takes center stage.
