The Epic 2-Mile Trail in West Virginia That’s Worth the Climb
This short-and-steep climb to the top of Hanging Rock reveals some of the state's most stunning mountain views.
One of my biggest motivations for going on a hike is anticipating the view from the top. Not all trails guarantee a breathtaking overlook, but my favorite ones always do. There's something inherently rewarding about knowing that each step is getting you closer and closer to the top—the ultimate reward for a leg-burning climb. That's why Hanging Rock Trail is officially on my hiking to-do list. This two-mile trail is a bit challenging, but it promises one of the state's best views.
Hanging Rock is tucked away in the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests near Waiteville. There's a dedicated parking lot along Waiteville Road, and from there, the trailhead is easy to find. The trail is narrow but well-marked, leading you to the top of the overlook. The climb up is just under one mile, but requires over 400 feet in elevation gain. Read: You'll want to wear your sturdy hiking boots, and hiking poles can help provide extra support as you navigate.
Despite the serious incline, most hikers agree this one's not too tough, and it's rated as moderate on AllTrails. Some sections are particularly steep and have loose gravel in areas, so you'll want to be mindful of each step.
As you make your way to the summit, you'll pass through the woods. This section isn't what the trail is famous for, but there is something magical and soothing about walking through the hardwood trees. Visit early in the morning or on a weekday, and odds are, you'll have this trail mostly to yourself. Well, mostly to yourself—depending on the time of year you visit, you'll notice lots of snails and a few frogs along the path!
The view from the top is breathtaking; even photos don't quite do it justice. From this stunning vantage point, you'll be able to see Peters Mountain, Wind Rock, Potts Mountain, and other peaks, all framed by the dramatic rock formations that make up Hanging Rock. Hanging Rock Raptor Observatory is also nearby, although it's currently closed for repair. Be sure to check the USDA website for updates on when it will be open again, because it offers another remarkable view of the valley below.
So whether you're looking for a leg-burning trail or feel inspired by endless mountain views, you'll be glad you added this trail to your hiking repertoire.
