This 88-Foot Attraction in Washington Begs for You To Pull Over
You'll find these stunning falls just a short walk from the parking lot.
All over the Evergreen State, there are roadside attractions worth pulling over to admire. The Fremont Troll, the world’s largest egg, and Hat n’ Boots Park are just a few notable examples that we find are worth visiting at least once. But if you are looking for a roadside attraction that Mother Nature created herself, there’s nothing quite like Nooksack Falls. Located in the Mount Baker Snoqualmie National Forest, these impressive falls are just a short walk from the highway and absolutely stunning. You’ll certainly want to get out of your vehicle for the view.
On the west side of the North Cascades, right off Highway 542 and approximately 12 miles from Mount Baker Ski Area, you’ll come to Nooksack Falls. Follow the signs and pull over to stop and stare—this is one natural wonder that you’ll regret driving by.
After parking, you won’t need to worry about lacing up your hiking shoes like you do with other waterfall hikes in the Evergreen State. Rather, you’ll only have to walk approximately 0.1 miles out-and-back to capture incredible views of this Washington waterfall.
And you'll know you are close as you’ll hear the sound of the tumbling water as you walk. This typically isn’t a very busy waterfall, allowing you to easily enjoy the views (and sounds) on your own. It's the perfect road trip stop.
Once you spot the falls, you’ll quickly understand why we recommend stopping here. Nooksack Falls tumbles approximately 88 feet in a rocky canyon and into a large natural pool below. The rocky canyon and waterfall are surrounded by thick evergreen trees, creating a picture-perfect setting. In fact, I recommend you have your camera ready because you won’t want to forget these roadside falls anytime soon.
And while the falls are certainly the main attraction, I also recommend you stop, pause, and admire the river. It is rough and rocky in places, but a gorgeous sight from every angle.
As with all Washington hiking trails, please stay on the designated trail. There is a fence to keep you from climbing on these falls or getting too close, as the rocks are slippery and the falls are not forgiving. Be respectful and mindful of these boundaries, and always leave this area better than you found it. Also, be mindful that portions of Highway 542 close in the winter months. If you have a long drive planned in this area after a heavy snowfall, check for any potential closures before you go.
In my opinion, waterfalls make for some of the best roadside stops. They remind you of what’s important, the sounds of nature can help relieve stress, and the views make you fall in love with the area you are exploring. Nooksack Falls doesn’t require a long walk, but it’s a walk worth taking. It’s truly incredible.
