The Can’t-Miss Washington Hike for Every Nature Lover’s Bucket List

Immerse yourself in nature all year long when you explore this beautiful Washington hike.

For me, nothing is as grounding as being surrounded by the sights and sounds of nature — whether it's feeling my toes in the sand and listening to waves crashing on the beach, swimming in a scenic lake, or hiking through a towering forest. If you ever find yourself in need of a little calming nature therapy, head immediately to this stunning nature lover's hike in Washington.

Sand Lake and Deer Lake Trail is just over 5 miles out and back. It begins by following the Pacific Crest Trail, just off US-12 near the White Pass North Trailhead. You’ll start off with some gentle switchbacks through the evergreen forest, passing an old logging road and a couple of other trail junctions along the way. The trail is maintained and, though there are some gentle climbs, it isn't terribly steep and offers plenty of flat areas.

A little over two miles from the trailhead, a small spur trail to the left leads to the first stunning body of water — Deer Lake — with Sand Lake lying past a clearing nearly half a mile ahead. On warm summer days, the shallow lakes, with their sandy bottoms and cool water, are perfect for kids (and their grown-ups!) to splash around in. Deer Lake is especially great since its shoreline is an ideal spot for a relaxing picnic. You can shorten this hike by turning around at Deer Lake, or extend it by hiking beyond Sand Lake.

The levels of Sand Lake vary, which just so happens to provide the perfect moist soil for a gorgeous meadow of colorful wildflowers, particularly during spring and summer. Dampness can also mean mosquitos, so be sure to bring some protection.

The fall season brings crisp air and lovely fall colors. As early as September, you’ll find the ground foliage changing hues. Fall is also prime time for mushroom hunters who will find a delightful array of shapes and colors emerging in the forest.

During the winter, the entire area becomes a stunning white wonderland, a perfect snowy getaway. The trail is wonderful for snowshoeing and backcountry skiing. Unless the snow has just fallen, you’ll find an established route so it is not difficult to explore.

Whenever you visit, keep an eye out for the area’s resident wildlife, from birds to elk to Deer Lake’s namesake, blacktail deer. Sand Lake and Deer Lake Trail is a family and dog-friendly hike with campsites nearby for an extended adventure. Every season brings a new landscape and a new experience, so this is one you'll want to revisit again and again.

Are you ready to explore this gorgeous trail? Lace up your boots, grab your keys, stash a picnic or some awesome snacks, and let's go! Depending on the weather, this area is subject to road closures, which you can easily check on the U.S. Forest Service website. Be sure to share this Washington hike with a fellow nature lover and check out more easy trails to add to your bucket list! Happy hiking!
