Here Are the Best Times and Places To View Washington’s Fall Foliage in 2025
There's something magical about Washington State in the autumn months. You don't want miss the scenes that only appear once a year.

Are you looking to explore the most beautiful places in our state this autumn? Fall foliage transforms areas around Washington State each year, creating truly dreamy scenery. Unfortunately, however, the vibrant colors of autumn's palette don't last forever, and timing is everything. Whether you wish to plan a scenic drive, a hike, or a visit to some of the state's breathtaking national or state parks, you'll want to plan ahead as much as possible.
So, when will the colors change in Washington in 2025? By the end of September, residents of Seattle will start to see trees adorned in metallic golds and vibrant reds. Strolling through the arboretum will give you a fabulous look at these spectacular colors. Around the same time, larches in the North Cascades turn stunning shades of yellow. These unique trees are one of the only deciduous conifers in the world, and they paint the rugged mountain slopes with spectacular washes of color.
Late September and early October is when the foliage in Whatcom County should be at its best. It's worth setting aside an hour or two to wander through Whatcom Falls Park to appreciate the delicate orange leaves.

For good reason, maples and other deciduous trees get the most glory for their gorgeous autumn displays. But don't forget about alpine forests! By early October, the groundcovers and shrubs of Mount Rainier will give lower-elevation maples a run for their money.
On the east side of the Cascade mountain range, meander along the Spokane River and delight in the autumn hues. These colors are estimated to pass their peak by the middle of October, so plan your visit accordingly!
By Halloween, most of the colors in the Evergreen State will be past their peak, so you don't want to delay. I recommend you start building your fall bucket list so you can cross off every adventure before the snow starts to fall.
It's no secret among my friends that I think autumn is the best time to enjoy Washington. If you're visiting from elsewhere, consider coordinating your stay to see your destination at its best. Summers may be glorious, but fall colors make our state's already beautiful landscapes sublime.
