The Best Dog-Friendly Hikes in Washington for an Outdoor Adventure

There's no better companion for outdoor adventure than your dog.

Washington is easily one of the country's most dog-friendly states, and possibly one of the most dog-friendly places in the world. Canines here aren't sidelined for the family portrait — they're often the stars of the show. It's no surprise that outdoorsy PNWers seek adventures that include their four-legged companions.

Still, not all hikes or parks are suitable for Fido. With a duty to protect fragile ecosystems and native wildlife, some of our state's most iconic routes remain rightfully off-limits. But don't despair. These four dog-friendly trails in Washington are so stunning, you won't feel like you're missing a thing.

1. Ptarmigan Ridge Trail

Of all the Pacific Northwest's breathtaking hikes, Mount Baker's Ptarmigan Ridge Trail may be one of my favorites. With almost 2,500 feet of elevation gain over a 12-mile, out-and-back climb, it isn't for the faint-hearted. Even in deep summer, you'll likely encounter snowfields alongside the wildflowers, so plan your gear accordingly. In exchange for your hard work, you'll glimpse mesmerizing views of the North Cascades — a perfect slice of Washington's legendary alpine beauty. As for your pup? He'll be having an epic adventure alongside you!

2. Rattlesnake Ledge Trail

Tucked near North Bend, just 30 minutes from Seattle, it's no wonder Rattlesnake Ledge Trail is so popular with people and pets. Still, if you're up for the ascent, the views don't disappoint. In the summertime, spot the lake sparkling below, and, in the winter, marvel at the valley's moody blanket of mist. At a tidy five miles long, I recommend packing a picnic to enjoy at the top. Just don't forget to pack something for Fido!

3. Lake 22 Trail

Few trails offer more variety than Mount Baker's Lake 22. Climbing gradually, hikers weave their way through stands of old-growth forest, pass fairytale waterfalls, and cross lively creeks before emerging beside the lake — easily one of the state's most beautiful. Though it's only six miles, the varied terrain gives the trek a sense of grand adventure. When you reach your destination, you'll feel you and your four-legged companion earned it.

4. Snoquera Falls Loop Trail

Looking for something more approachable? Whether you're new to the hobby or hiking with kids, Snoquera Falls Loop Trail is a fantastic option. Clocking in at under four miles and boasting little elevation gain, it's nonetheless packed with gorgeous views of the alpine scenery. Pack a lunch and a refreshing drink for this bite-sized sample of the Cascades — you and your pooch will return home satisfied and ready for more the next day!
