Everyone in Virginia Must Visit This Epic Waterfall As Soon As Possible
A visit to Crabtree Falls might make you forget that you’re only a few miles from the familiar Blue Ridge Parkway. This gorgeous waterfall is the gateway into a whole network of pristine trails, vistas, and overlooks. But the truth is, you could easily spend an entire day just marveling at the water.
East of the Mississippi, you won't find a grander cascading waterfall.
The five mesmerizing cascades will seem almost ethereal in the midst of the heavily-wooded George Washington National Forest.
Crabtree Creek flows from the majestic Crabtree Meadows through a unique hanging valley before plummeting nearly 1200 feet down to the Tye River.
Your first glimpse of the waterfall is only a few hundred feet from the parking lot. There is no hike to the waterfall...the waterfall IS the hike. The path leading to the first viewpoint is paved and gentle, ensuring comfort for visitors of all ages.

And that is what makes Crabtree Falls so memorable: you have the opportunity to hike right alongside the tumbling falls.
Proceed with caution, though. A railed stairway will safely lead the way. The rocks in shallow areas outside the marked path may look stable, but are actually covered in a film of invisible algae. Please pay attention to the warning signs. Many have fallen victim to this dangerous area.
You can expect to see plenty of hidden gems along the way, especially during spring and summer. Keep on the lookout for some beautiful blooms...
...and some of the friendly locals.
You'll fall in love with this view at any time of the year.
Climbing all the way to the top will grant this rare view of the Tye River Valley vistas. Surprisingly, you won't be able to see much of the waterfall from this point. In this case, the journey really is the destination. Here you'll have the opportunity to continue along the stream towards the meadows or head back down.
With the Appalachian Trail just a few miles away, Crabtree Falls is the perfect launching point for a longer expedition or camping getaway.
Even the calm waters here are breathtaking. Be sure to check out the lower lot to get a glimpse of this wooden bridge over the Tye River.
Crabtree Falls is not just a phenomenal waterfall; it's a place where you can interact and explore with the surrounding scenery. Pack a picnic, lace up your hiking boots, and enjoy a beautiful day out by the Falls. The area is open from dawn 'til dusk…so get out there and start exploring! Crabtree Falls can be found at 11581 Crabtree Falls Hwy, Montebello, Va. 24464.
