If You Live in Virginia, Exploring the Cherry Blossom Trail Is Hands-Down the Best Way to Enjoy Spring

Meander through blossoming cherry trees on this gentle neighborhood stroll in Southwestern Virginia.

Winter in Virginia sometimes feels like a season to simply get through. Sure, there are many perks of the cold season, but most of us are counting down the days until the arrival of warmer weather. And when spring finally does arrive, there's no shortage of activities to celebrate this beautiful season in Virginia. This year, at the top of our list, is a trip to the Cherry Blossom Trail in Troutville, Virginia. This supremely underrated trail offers visitors the chance to walk through dozens of blossoming cherry trees, the perfect introduction to spring.

A gentle, meandering 2.4-mile trail will take you through the breathtaking countryside of Botetourt County. The gravel trail is flat and wide, making it a perfect option for beginners or young hikers. By all accounts, the trail is in excellent condition and easy to navigate at any time of the year. But there's one season when the trail positively shines: early spring.

When you arrive at the parking area, you'll notice the Botetourt Bee Sanctuary, another hidden gem of the trail that serves as a haven for honeybees and also a place for public education about beekeeping. As you begin the trail, you'll follow a scenic brook and glimpse mountains in the distance. And if you time your visit just right, you'll enjoy some truly stunning cherry blossoms. These trees are some of my favorites; their light pink hues are all the more beautiful simply because they don't last very long.

If, like me, you've been wondering, "Where can I see cherry blossoms in Virginia?" You'll be delighted to have discovered this neighborhood trail. It's popular but never overcrowded. Dogs are also welcome on the trail, so long as they are wearing a leash.

The trail eventually winds past Greenfield Lake, a lovely body of water framed by the mountains in the distance. In our opinion, this looks like the perfect spot to set up for an outdoor picnic! Or, if you'd like, there are picnic tables available at the beginning of the trail.

It's difficult to predict exactly when cherry blossoms begin to bloom, but on average, your best bet is between late March and mid-April.
