Let's take a closer look at why we love Big Gem Park in Shenandoah, Virginia.
It's perhaps unusual to describe a park as "cozy," but it's a fitting word for Big Gem Park, nestled along the road in the little town of Shenandoah. The town, which is located in Page County, has a population of just under 2,500 residents, and it's known for its proximity to the Shenandoah River, breathtaking mountain views, and close-knit community. In the late 1800s, the town was famous for its production of pig iron. At its peak, the Big Gem Cast Iron Furnace produced over 32,000 tons of pig iron each year. By the early 1900s, iron had reached its peak; however, the area would forever be known as Big Gem.
Big Gem Park is nested right between the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Massanutten Ridge, offering a treasure trove of natural beauty. Most of the park is wilderness, but the portion that is maintained is maintained beautifully.
It's a wonderful place to bring the kids, as there's new playground equipment to enjoy. For hikers, there are a handful of short trails that will showcase the park's natural beauty. These trails are popular among bird watchers, who have spotted beautiful indigo buntings, Carolina wrens, and American goldfinches.
One of the park's newest features is a beautiful quarter-mile paved nature trail that meets ADA accessibility standards. We love that this park offers accessibility for all of its visitors! It's a special kind of place to unwind and immerse yourself in the natural beauty of this corner of Virginia.
