In the late 1800s, the town was famous for its production of pig iron. At its peak, the Big Gem Cast Iron Furnace produced over 32,000 tons of pig iron each year. By the early 1900s, iron had reached its peak; however, the area would forever be known as Big Gem.

Big Gem Park is nested right between the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Massanutten Ridge, offering a treasure trove of natural beauty. Most of the park is wilderness, but the portion that is maintained is maintained beautifully.
