You Can Explore A Stunning Reservoir Hiding In The Virginia Mountains By Paddle
Flannagan Reservoir in Southwest Virginia offers a secluded and scenic paddling destination with over 1,000 acres of water surface.
Near the town of Clintwood awaits one of the state's most beautiful yet little-known paddling destinations: Flannagan Reservoir. It's hiding deep within Southwest Virginia's mountains and resides at an elevation of 1,400 feet. For those that enjoy paddling, it's hard to imagine a more scenic -- or secluded -- destination. With over 1,000 acres of water surface to explore, you'll quickly fall in love with this tucked-away reservoir.
If you've ever visited Dickinson County, you can attest to the fact that it's one of Virginia's best-kept secrets.
The same could be said of the county's hidden-away treasures, the John W. Flannagan Reservoir.
The water is managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and it showcases rugged shorelines with an abundance of trees and secluded valleys.
The reservoir was initially built to provide flood control.
Those exploring by kayak or canoe will love the abundance of embayments formed by the shoreline.
It's a gorgeous place to visit with the entire family, whether you're out on a boat or exploring by foot. Plus, day-use areas and nearby campgrounds allow you to stay for an extended period.
Campgrounds include Cranenest Campground, Lower Twin Campground, and Pound River Campground.
Since there are no nearby outfitters, you'll need to bring your own paddling equipment. It's an off-the-beaten-path adventure you won't soon forget!
