Aptly named, Mountain Lake is an exquisite natural attraction situated on top of Salt Pond Mountain.

The body of water was once referred to as Salt Pond because it was the site where cattle were given salt.

Residing at an elevation of 3,875 feet, it's the highest freshwater lake east of the Mississippi.

Since 2002, the lake has experienced the effects of dry seasons and its levels have lowered significantly. Depending on the amount of rainfall, the lake typically covers about 50 acres.

The surrounding area is managed by the Mountain Lake Conservancy, which protects 2,600 acres of the lake's pristine surroundings.

Visitors to the area today can embark on any number of outdoor activities.

Perhaps most famous is McAfee Knob, the iconic Appalachian Trail overlook with sweeping mountainous views that extend into neighboring states.

Other nearby hikes along the Appalachian Trail make for the perfect day trip excursion.

Even in the heart of winter, Mountain Lake is simply extraordinary frozen and glistening in the sun.

One of the best ways to access the lake is by a 5.9-mile loop trail known as the Mountain Lake Trails Loop.
