Visit This Dark Sky Park in Virginia for Stunning Winter Stargazing
Take stargazing to the next level at Natural Bridge State Park, a designated dark sky park in Virginia.
Have you ever heard of the concept of a Dark Sky Park? It's a designated area, typically protected land or a park, with such little light pollution that the stars shine exceptionally bright. These are places that are ideal for scientific study and, of course, stargazing. Fortunately for us, there are several designated Dark Sky Parks to enjoy. (In fact, Virginia has more designated Dark Sky areas than any other place east of the Mississippi!) One of our favorites at the moment is Natural Bridge State Park. It's an obvious choice for a day trip destination given the namesake natural wonder, Natural Bridge, but an overnight stay in the area promises some of the state's most memorable stargazing.
Anyone who has visited Natural Bridge State Park can attest to its stunning, magnificent, out-of-this-world beauty. The 215-foot natural arch spans 90 feet, and it sits in a limestone gorge carved by Cedar Creek. It's lovely by day, but the real show happens after the sun sets.
In April of 2021, Natural Bridge State Park was designated a Dark Sky Park, and since then, the park has been hosting a series of guided dark sky night programs. From meteor showers to Independence Day stargazing, there's no shortage of memorable events to enjoy.
There's something so grounding yet awe-inspiring about witnessing millions of stars overhead, and having an expert's insight makes the experience all the more memorable. The dates for 2026 have yet to be released, but be sure to check the events page on the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation's website to stay up-to-date. Guided programs last about two hours and usually take place anytime between 5:00 and 11:00 p.m.
If you're wondering if it's possible to camp at Natural Bridge State Park, the answer is yes! The campsites at Blue Hollow Campground have three tent pads, a private picnic shelter, and a fire pit. Campers should note that this is a primitive campground with no electricity or running water. The campsites are open year-round. For reservations, call 1-800-933-PARK.
