The Amazing Fossil Beach Every Virginian Will Want To Visit

Searching for fossils seems like an activity reserved for archaeologists. But you, too, can uncover millions of years of history when you visit a very special fossil beach in Virginia. The secluded and remote Fossil Beach is part of Westmoreland State Park, and it's tucked away between two large bluffs situated along the Potomac River. It's a great place to swim, fish, and, if you've got a keen eye, search for fossilized shark teeth.

It's hard to picture, but millions of years ago, the entire region of Virginia that now makes up Westmoreland County was completely under seawater.

As such, it was an ideal spot for sharks of all kinds to inhibit, including the Megladon!

Today, visitors from all over visit Fossil Beach in Virginia to sift through the sand and find remnants of these ancient sharks.

As you can see, the fossils and teeth come in all different shapes and sizes!
