Buffalo Mountain Natural Area Preserve In Floyd, Virginia Is So Little-Known, You Just Might Have It All To Yourself

Many of Virginia's natural wonders are so famous, they're known around the country. Some examples that come to mind are the Blue Ridge Mountains, the Appalachian Trail, and the Chesapeake Bay. Yet there are plenty of other treasures waiting to be discovered, and some of them are relatively unknown. One example is Buffalo Mountain Natural Area Preserve. This highly underrated gem can be found just outside of Floyd, Virginia, and if you're someone who enjoys off-the-beaten-path destinations, you're in for a real treat.

Tucked away in Floyd County awaits a pristine wilderness known as Buffalo Mountain Natural Area Preserve. Measuring 1,140 acres, the area is named for Buffalo Mountain, a 3,960-foot peak.

It's a hidden gem in every sense of the word. To explore this preserve, you'll want to locate the parking lot, which visitors should note is small and can accommodate roughly 10 cars.

The parking lot can be found at 890 Moles Rd SW, Willis, VA 24380.

From there, you can take a half-mile hike to the summit of Buffalo Mountain.

As you approach the top, you'll notice that the top of the mountain is treeless, giving way to breathtaking views of the surrounding wilderness.

And while the view is certainly stunning, you may be curious about what sets this preserve apart from other overlooks in Virginia. The answer is pretty fascinating!

The summit is home to a whole host of rare plants, animals, and insects.

Some of the rare plants found at the summit include three-toothed cinquefoil (Sibbaldia tridentata) and Rocky Mountain woodsia (Woodsia scopulina).

Moreover, it's the only place in the entire world where the mealybug Puto kosztarabi is known to live.

As you can see, it's an important habitat for many and a breathtaking place to explore for visitors.
