The Quechee Gorge is known as Vermont's Little Grand Canyon, it's simply spectacular to see from above, but what makes this such a great destination to explore is that it's just a 1-mile hike to the bottom and back. That's right, you can make this round trip hike in about an hour and the views and perspectives are simply amazing. Check out this canyon hike in VT for yourself!
The Quechee Gorge is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Vermont.
This 165-foot deep gorge can be viewed from the U.S. Route 4 bridge and from trails on both sides of the gorge.
Fall is particularly spectacular!
It’s one thing to view this sight from above, but there are equally fantastic views from below.
What’s even better is that it is very peaceful at the bottom, even if there is a crowd above.
The trails begin in Quechee State Park and are great for everyone, including hikers with young children.
The hike is fairly easy since it’s only about one mile, but there are other trails and destinations to check out along the way.
The Ottauquechee River flows through the bottom of the gorge and is a popular whitewater kayak run.
About 13,000 years ago during the Ice Age, Quechee (along with the entire region) was covered by a glacier.
As the glacier receded from the ocean, the melting waters cut away from the bedrock ridge that has become one of Vermont’s most spectacular sights.
The Quechee Gorge Visitor’s Center was built in 2005 and has plenty of parking as well as public restrooms at the start of lovely walking trails.
Pictures don’t always do the gorge justice, but we highly recommend bringing your camera!
