The Biggest Surprise I Came Across While Hiking This Incredible Trail in Vermont

Elmore State Park offers a five-mile trek that might just be one of the most scenic trails in Vermont.

In my opinion, Vermont has some of the best hiking trails in the country. I’m a sucker for mountain views, and the Green Mountain State certainly delivers in that category. No matter the time of year, I’m always on the hunt for hiking trails in Vermont that I want to revisit. I think this incredible trail in Vermont is one I’ll find myself coming back to again and again.

Elmore is a sleepy little town in Lamoille County that’s home to fewer than 1,000 residents. Its nickname is the “Beauty Spot of Vermont,” and it won’t take long to figure out why. This little corner of the state is truly magical. It’s an idyllic spot to escape to when you need to unplug from the grid and connect with nature. This is where you'll find Elmore State Park, one of the best state parks in Vermont.

The Mount Elmore Trail at Elmore State Park is a 5.4-mile loop trail that climbs to the top of Elmore Mountain and offers spectacular views along the way. The trail has 1,479 feet of elevation gain. It’s not the hardest trail you’ll ever do, but it will keep your heart rate up. The trail is well-maintained and well-marked. Just keep an eye out for tree roots and uneven terrain. Having the AllTrails map downloaded ahead of time is always a good idea.

You’ll encounter several unique views along the trail, ranging from scenic beaver ponds to the former ranger cabin site and even an impressive balancing rock.

My favorite view is of Lake Elmore. This 219-acre lake is a favorite spot for aquatic adventures, including swimming and boating. If you want to explore the park from the lake's perspective, you can even rent canoes, kayaks, pedal boats, and stand-up paddleboards from the park.

One of the trail's most surprising parts is that it leads to one of the last remaining fire towers in Vermont. The fire tower was built around 1939, and though it’s been decommissioned, it still remains standing and has become a favorite spot for soaking in those glorious Green Mountain views.

Those without a fear of heights can climb the tower’s stairs to reach the top. From here, you’ll have an uninterrupted view of the Worcester Range Mountains and the beautiful countryside of Lamoille County.

Overall, this is a beautiful trail in Vermont that’s perfect for an afternoon adventure. Depending on the time of year you visit, consider spending a weekend at the park and renting a campsite! Visit the Elmore State Park website to learn more. Don’t forget to share this article with your fellow hiker pal and start making plans to tackle this scenic hike soon!

While you’re in the area, swing by Ben & Jerry’s! It’s only 23 miles away and, let’s be honest, ice cream is the perfect sweet treat after a five-mile hike.
