During the summer months, southern Utah is one area of the state you may typically avoid. Not only can the sun be extremely cruel but the crowds can also be extremely overwhelming. Fortunately, there is a lesser-known place where you can still enjoy the red rocks, beaches, and even some time in the water — Falls Park. In fact, a day in this park makes for one stellar summer adventure.
Falls Park is located along the south side of the Virgin River, just outside of Virgin, Utah. It was originally established by the Bureau of Land Management to provide more space for visitors who want to enjoy the Virgin River.
Falls Park is also known as Sheep Bridge to locals. This is because the park is home to Sheep Bridge, an old bridge created by a sheepherder. It was used to move sheep back and forth across the river.
In 2000, the Utah Department of Transportation built a new bridge next to the old one that is much wider and safer.
Falls Park in southern Utah is the place to go if you want to enjoy some time on and near the Virgin River. In the park, you will find approximately one mile of the river which is perfect for all types of activities.
For example, you will find portions of the river that are calm and feature sandy beaches.
There are other areas that feature large rocky cliffs, which are popular for cliff jumping.
However, before you jump into the Virgin River, even if you’ve jumped into the same area before, always check the depth of the water. Because of the flood cycles in this river, sand and debris can make a once-deep area very shallow.
You may also want to bring some tubes and float down this stretch of the Virgin River. While portions can be quite lazy, you may encounter some mild rapids. Tubing this river may not be best for young children and inexperienced swimmers.
But that’s okay. Younger children can spend time in the shallow water, splashing, wading, and even catching small frogs.
Falls Park is free to visit. Hours for this park are 8:00 a.m. to dusk. Be aware that the park is located down a short dirt road that can be quite rough, particularly after rain. Once you reach the parking area, you will find a parking area, bathrooms, and picnic tables.
