When the weather is sunny and you're feeling bored, it's time to hop in the car for a road trip! The Sheep Creek Geologic Loop offers up plenty of scenic beauty, and a trip past its stunning rock formations is a great way to spend the day. If you keep an eye out, you might see a herd of Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep.
The Sheep Creek Geologic Loop is a 13-mile-long scenic route near Flaming Gorge.
The scenic loop starts just five miles south of the little town of Manila, which is located just west of Flaming Gorge, near the Utah/Wyoming border.
The Uinta Fault stretches for more than 100 miles here, and in some places, it's easy to see. The fault formed more than 1.5 billion years ago.
The road follows along Sheep Creek , then heads down into the canyon. You'll twist and turn through the trees of the Ashley National Forest, and view some pretty scenery along the way.
Take your time, and keep an eye out for wildlife during your drive.
A herd of Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep call this beautiful place home, and they're often easy to spot right from the road.
Don't forget to watch for them up higher, as well!
The bighorn sheep aren't the only animals in this area. Road trippers often spy birds of prey, deer, elk, and other mammals.
The geologic history of this place, with its dramatic cliffs and twisted spires is fascinating. Set aside about an hour for your scenic drive on the Sheep Creek Geologic Loop.
If you have some extra time to explore this area, take a side trip to Spirit Lake. It's a scenic spot for a picnic, and the fishing can be pretty good here as well.
The Sheep Creek Geologic Area is well worth exploring. Gas up the car and take a drive to see it!
