There's nothing like a beautiful hike through Utah's red rock desert and it's even better when the payoff at the end is stunning in every way. Here's a trail that takes you through part of southern Utah's Red Cliffs Recreation Area, and if you time it just right, you'll find a little oasis that's perfect for soaking. Along this trail, you'll find a small, but beautiful waterfall, natural swimming hole, and Red Reef natural water slides in Utah.
The Red Cliffs National Conservation Area encompasses 45,000 acres north of St. George. Here, you will find more than 130 miles of trails to explore.
You'll find the inspiring Red Reef Trail in the Red Cliffs Recreation Area, which is part of the larger Conservation Area. The trailhead is next to campsite number two in the Red Cliffs Campground.
The trail to the first waterfall swimming hole is rated as easy, with a very small elevation change. It's 2.2 miles out and back and you'll want to make sure you bring some sunscreen, a hat, and plenty of water.
The scenery along the trail is typical of southern Utah, with plenty of red rock formations and blue skies overhead.
You'll soon reach a little slot canyon with a series of small waterfalls tumbling down into pools. Depending on the time of year you're visiting, there might be a lot of water ... or the falls and pools might be dry.
When the water is flowing, these little falls act as natural water slides. Use caution when jumping into the pools; the depths vary, and there might be boulders hidden beneath the boulders that can cause injuries.
On weekday afternoons, this place is usually pretty quiet, but on weekends, be prepared to share your swimming hole with others.
You're welcome to bring your pup along on this hike — as long as he's on a leash. It goes without saying that you'll clean up after him and also remove any trash that you bring in.
Let's keep this place as beautiful as we found it so that those who visit next can experience the same stunning scenery!
