The Can’t-Miss Utah Hike for Every Nature Lover’s Bucket List
This iconic hike in Utah leads you on a scenic journey towards one of the most relaxing hot springs in Utah.
What do you think is the most iconic hike in Utah? Delicate Arch and Angels Landing are certainly two front-runners. While Utah’s most popular hikes are characterized by the state’s iconic mountains, plateaus, and canyons, the state’s unique location makes it a perfect area for hot springs. Crystal Hot Springs in Northern Utah might be the most famous, but there’s another hot spring in Utah that’s equally as beautiful.
The Fifth Water Hot Springs Trail is a 4.6-mile out-and-back trail near Mapleton that will lead you straight to a set of hot springs. You’ll find three waterfalls and a few hot springs along Fifth Water Creek, a tributary of the Diamond Fork River.
Before you embark on this epic outdoor adventure, check the road and trail conditions first. The U.S. Forest Service has a Facebook page so you can easily see any weather-related closures.
Even if the conditions allow the trails and roads to be open, this trail can be icy in some areas—wear spikes and trekking poles. On a good day, this trail is easy, but once winter arrives this trail can become dangerous and no one wants to break an ankle!
There is parking and a bathroom at the trailhead, but since this is a popular spot, that parking lot can fill up quickly! Plan this trek early to avoid the crowds. Also, make sure you don’t park on the street; you might come back to find a ticket on your windshield.
As you start to make your way closer to the hot springs, you’ll see the water begin to turn a beautiful milky blue color. The smell of sulfur fills the air, and you’ll hear the sounds of others splashing the day away.
There are a few different pools here, and I’d encourage you to try them all! The temperatures in each pool can vary, so finding that sweet spot can take some time. Make sure you bring plenty of water with you. Those hot springs can dehydrate you faster than you’d think!
Feel free to relax in the hot springs for as long as you’d like! It’s a lovely way to get some steps in while also being able to enjoy Utah’s natural beauty. Don’t forget to bring a towel!
