Reflection Canyon In Lake Powell Is So Little-Known, You Just Might Have It All To Yourself
Reflection Canyon at Lake Powell offers a remote and peaceful escape for experienced hikers and boaters.
Lake Powell is a popular outdoor attraction in Utah. It’s the place to go to in the Beehive State if you want to spend time on the water, swim, boat, and enjoy some sunshine. Unfortunately, Lake Powell draws quite a crowd, making a day of peace and quiet quite difficult to achieve. But, there is one destination in this recreation area that you might just have all to yourself — Reflection Canyon.
Reflection Canyon is a remote canyon located on the Escalante arm of Lake Powell. It is one area of the lake that is lesser known and not easy to access, making it the perfect destination to escape from the crowds.
This destination became known by National Geographic photographer Michael Melford. He published an article that included a photo of Reflection Canyon and many people fell in love with the area.
Note: the image above is not Melford's photo.
To reach Reflection Canyon, you have two options: boat or hike. While accessing Reflection Canyon by boat may be the easiest option, the hike to the canyon is unforgettable.
The trail to Reflection Canyon is approximately 15 miles one way. It is not an easy trek as there are some very difficult portions of the hike you must conquer. We strongly suggest that only experienced hikers and those with navigation skills make the trek on foot.
To reach the trailhead, you will travel along Hole in the Rock Road near Escalante. You will travel approximately 50 miles and the road is rough and a four-wheel drive vehicle is ideal. Also, make sure you have all supplies needed and your gas tank is full as there are no services along this road or anywhere in the area.
Also, the majority of this trail is in the sun and no water is found along the route, so you must pack accordingly.
The trek to Reflection Canyon is ideal for backpackers. You will need to pack accordingly for several days and a permit is required for all overnight trips in the area.
Visit the Escalante Interagency Visitor Center for more information on permits.
However, once you arrive at Reflection Canyon, you’ll be glad you made the trek. No matter the time of day, the views are breathtaking — definitely don’t rush back.
Reflection Canyon is a true hidden gem in southern Utah and due to its challenging journey and remote location, you must just have the area all to yourself.
Have you ever been to Reflection Canyon? Did you visit via boat or on foot? We’d love to hear all about your experiences and please share your photos as well.
