This Natural Wonder in Texas is The Definition of a Hidden Gem

I've always been utterly fascinated by carnivorous plants. They're creepy in the best way possible, so you can imagine how thrilled I was to learn about a hiking trail in Texas that leads to an entire grove of them. The Pitcher Plant Trail at Big Thicket National Preserve is one of my favorite hidden gems in the Lone Star State because it's such an unexpected treasure. Not only is the hike short and easy, but it also gets you up close and personal with one of nature's greatest enigmas.

An offshoot of the Turkey Creek Trail, the Pitcher Plant Trail is only a mile long and has virtually no elevation gain, so it's perfect for hikers of all skill levels. It's a loop, and the trailhead can be found off of County Road 4850. It's well-marked and maintained, and the first third of the hike is even paved by a wooden boardwalk. Benches are interspersed along the trail, so you can take a break to admire the gorgeous views whenever the mood strikes.

Of course, the pine trees characteristic of East Texas are always lovely to see, but they pale in comparison to the pitcher plants. There are thousands of them in a relatively small area, and a viewing platform lets you get a better look. When you see the plants up close, they almost look like they're maniacally grinning at you. Their mouths are twisted into sinister sneers, and it totally elevates the creepy vibes that are already quite apparent.

It is worth noting that the Pitcher Plant Trail intersects with the Turkey Creek Trail, which, at 17 miles, is one of the longest trails at Big Thicket National Preserve. If a one-mile hike just isn't enough of an adventure for you, you can always keep exploring until your heart's content!
