Texas is often thought of as a huge, Wild West desert with canyons and rocks as far as the eye can see. It is that, and it also has no shortage of gorgeous greenery to explore. Westlake Preserve is an outdoor discovery center that aims to educate people about the intricacies and fragility of nature. It's known as a living laboratory, where you can see geologic formations that are hundreds of thousands of years old.
You can hike through those formations to a hidden grotto where you can witness the workings of the natural water cycle. Whether you simply love natural beauty, are a biology buff, or both, you'll certainly have an unforgettable time at this awe-inspiring natural wonderland.
The hiking begins in the savanna uplands, in a prairie restoration area that spans 45 acres and contains Ashe juniper and live oak trees.
During some parts of the year, you can see a sea of bluebonnets - the Texas state flower. Their bluish-purple hue is a relaxing sight that will draw many a dreamy sigh.
Once you get further downhill, you'll encounter this amazing cave with rounded crystalline stalagmites and stalactites formed by eons of dripping water.
Ancient fossils can also be found on display showing that this pristine habitat has been home to countless species throughout its natural history.
Autumn is one of the best times to hike here as the multicolored leaves create a cornucopia of color for the eyes to feast upon. But the journey is equally stunning in the spring and summer when bright green grass and colorful wildflowers dominate the landscape.
At last, you arrive at this lush, green grotto, tucked away and covered with moss and ferns. You can hear tiny waterfalls trickling into the pristine water.
This grotto is gorgeous from any angle and is a wonderful place to simply kick back and breathe out your worries. Anyone could spend hours here and leave simultaneously invigorated and calm.
The Westcave Outdoor Discovery Center hosts field trips for kids and specialty educational hikes for all ages. There are various events throughout the year, and they also collaborate with over 60 non-profit organizations to further ecological education and conservation.
Only 45 minutes east is the world-famous town of Austin, and there is much to explore nearby. You can take an unforgettable tubing adventure or take a historical road trip to see a ton of Texas treasures.
