We Did the Research, This Is Officially the Funniest Hiking Trail Name in Texas

The Knobby Knees Trail is a hiking trail in Texas with a quirky name — and beautiful scenery. Come step into a world of whimsy and wonder.

A sense of humor is one of many things that's bigger in the Lone Star State. If you don't believe me, this list of strange Texas town names is proof enough. Still not convinced? I've found a hiking trail in Texas that is guaranteed to get a laugh out of you. The Knobby Knees Trail in the Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge in Liberty, Texas, is short, easy, and has arguably the funniest name of any trail in the state. It's great for kids and offers beautiful scenery from start to finish (can you guess where its name comes from? I'll give you a hint: it's a natural feature common in the swampy landscapes of Southeast Texas and Louisiana).

If you're looking for a low-effort, high-reward hike perfect for a quick afternoon outing with the family, you have to check out the Knobby Knees Trail. This 1.2-mile loop has no elevation gain and only takes 20 minutes to complete, so it's ideal for those times when you need to clear your head but don't have time for a long excursion.

Since the trail is located within Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge, it's popular among birdwatchers and wildlife photographers. If you need a good camera, REI has you covered! In addition to many species of birds, you'll also see deer, squirrels, and lots of other creatures, including snakes, so wear long pants and stay vigilant if it's warm outside when you come.

You'll feel like you've stepped into the world of Snow White with so many animals frolicking through the trees. Such a gorgeous trail is bound to attract crowds, right? Wrong. Most hikers who left reviews on AllTrails said they had it all to themselves. Nature is therapeutic enough as it is, but when you add solitude into the mix, its healing powers are amplified tenfold.

Now, onto the fun part: how the trail's name came to be. It hasn't been officially confirmed, but all you have to do is take one look around to form a hypothesis. The swampy terrain is full of cypress knees, an enduring symbol of the South whose function isn't fully understood (but we still love them).

The icing on the cake is the elevated wooden boardwalk leading through the field of trees. Walking across it feels like entering a fairytale, with each step bringing you further into the magic.
