This Quiet Austin Nature Preserve Feels Worlds Away From The City

I love visiting places that take me (mentally, at least) away from the stressful, always-plugged-in reality of the modern world and, instead, offer peace and quiet. Mayfield Park in Austin, TX, is one such place, and I really feel that not enough people know about it. This tiny oasis features beautiful gardens, a historic cottage, and — get this — wild peacocks strutting their stuff all day long! It’s one of the best city parks in Texas, and I hope you get to visit soon.

The History of Mayfield Park

Austin is a city full of parks and green spaces, so it's only natural for some of them to fly under the radar. One of these lesser-known spots is Mayfield Park, a whimsical Austin park tucked away at the foot of Mount Bonnell. This Austin nature preserve covers 23 acres and is a lush oasis reminiscent of a bygone era with its enchanting stone cottages, archways, and perfectly manicured gardens. It looks like a fairytale destination in the middle of the city, and certainly feels that way when walking around.

The park dates to 1909, when a man named Allison Mayfield purchased the land and existing cottage as a summer home for his family. In 1922, Mayfield's daughter, Mary, moved into the home with her husband, and the two of them made many improvements, not just to the cottage, but to the rest of the property as well. Mary left the home and gardens to the City of Austin following her death in 1971, and created one of the most unique Texas parks.

What To Know Before Visiting Mayfield Park

The park is a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of the capital city. Its numerous gardens are bursting with colorful blooms maintained by local volunteers, and the largest stand of Sabal Texana palm trees north of the Rio Grande provides much-needed shade during the warmer months. Since Mayfield Park is located along the Colorado River, it's the perfect place to sit and watch the gentle current push the placid waters onto shore. Ponds with lily pads can be found throughout the park as well. You'll certainly find Mayfield Park to be one of the most peaceful Texas parks.

The best time of the day to come to Mayfield Park is either early in the morning or late afternoon through early evening. These times will ensure cooler temperatures and fewer crowds, if you're hoping for some solitude.

Why The Peacocks Make This Austin Park So Unique

The most unique thing about Mayfield Park — and, consequently, what it's famous for — is the group of wild peacocks that call it home. Whether proudly displaying their colorful, ornate feathers and strutting around for all to see or napping in the sunlight, these beautiful creatures are truly a captivating sight to see. You may even hear a peacock's loud call before even seeing it!

What's more, the birds are known for being extremely friendly, so bring the whole family and get ready for a fun adventure you'll talk about for years to come. I'd also like to mention that the historic cottage is available to rent for weddings and other events — I can't imagine a more beautiful space to gather for a special event.
