Love the Grand Canyon? Try This Similar Spot in Texas

Caprock Canyons State Park in Texas is a Grand Canyon lookalike that's much less crowded than the real thing.

Nothing compares to the Grand Canyon. There's a reason it's one of the top three most-visited national parks in the U.S. If you've been, you understand. I'll never forget how, on my first trip there, I stood completely still in awe of the view for a solid ten minutes. Despite everything the Grand Canyon has going for it, there are a few downsides: it's always crowded when the weather is nice and partially inaccessible in the winter.

But what if there were another option? Palo Duro Canyon is often compared to the Grand Canyon because it's the nation's next-largest canyon, but it, too, is always swamped. However, Caprock Canyons State Park & Trailway is a Grand Canyon lookalike in Texas that offers the best of both worlds: incredible scenery and solitude.

Featuring red rocks dotted with greenery, Caprock Canyons State Park & Trailway is as close as it gets to the Grand Canyon here in Texas. Shaped by eons of erosion, its ancient beauty belongs on a postcard. There are over 90 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails, ranging in length from around one mile to 15 miles. While there's no rim-to-rim trail here, the 6.6-mile Haynes Ridge Overlook Trail provides a nice challenge with its 600-foot ascent. It leads to the highest point in the park, and the view from the top is astonishing.

Caprock Canyons even has something the Grand Canyon doesn't: a lake! The 120-acre Lake Theo is an oasis for swimming, fishing, and no-wake boating. You can also borrow a fishing pole from the visitor's center.

The Grand Canyon is rich with wildlife, and so is Caprock Canyons. In fact, the park is home to the Texas State Bison Herd, which consists of nearly 150 bison that roam the plains freely. Just remember to observe bison etiquette for your safety and theirs.

It's hard to get the full park experience in just one day, so consider camping overnight so you have more time to explore. Campsites range from primitive hike-in sites to drive-up sites with electricity. And if you're really up for an adventure, try renting an RV instead!
