It is no secret that South Dakota has a rich railroad history, but like other states, most of the once-vital lines are no more, leaving behind remnants of a much different time. To see one of these historic routes in a new and innovative way, get outside and follow this abandoned South Dakota railroad trail. You'll quickly see why it's considered one of the best hikes in South Dakota.
Beginning in Edgemont and ending in Deadwood is the George S. Mickelson Trail; a whopping 109-mile path that follows the same route as the original Burlington Northern Railroad.
Named in honor of the late South Dakota Governor George S. Mickelson, the conversion of the line began in 1991 and was finally completed in 1998.
Since then, this rail-to-trail -- the first ever for South Dakota -- has been a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts, with thousands of visitors each year walking, biking, and running the trail.
You can even bring your pups along on the scenic South Dakota trail. Just remember to keep him leashed and to clean up after him.
In addition to the trail itself, George S. Mickelson boasts a number of other unique features, including four different tunnels...
...100 converted railroad bridges...
...and some of the most lush and beautiful Black Hills scenery you could hope to find!
The George S. Mickelson Trailhead is located at 11361 Nevada Gulch Road in Lead and costs $4 per day for visitors ages 12 and up. You can also purchase an annual pass for $15.
