South Dakota's Badlands National Park is an incredible sight, and the best way to see it is to take a hike to get up close and personal with the rock formations here. This hike isn't easy, but it's well worth the effort.
Notch Trail is a 1.5 mile round-trip hike that takes you from the valley floor to a notch in the rock that provides a stunning view.
The trailhead starts at the Door and Window trails parking area, on the south side.
You'll start by hiking on a level path along the canyon floor.
There's not much shade on this trail, so make sure you slather on the sunscreen and bring plenty of water.
You'll soon reach a log ladder that will take you to the top.
The ladder really isn't very steep until the last little section. If you're afraid of heights, this hike probably isn't for you.
Once you reach the top of the ladder, some narrow ledges lead the way to the end of the hike.
Watch for birds nesting here!
At the end of the trail, you're rewarded with this stunning view of the White River Valley.
Before you embark on this hike, make sure you're wearing sturdy shoes, have plenty of water and aren't afraid of heights. The park service advises against this hike when it's raining because both the ladder and trail become very slippery.
