One of the Best Fishing Spots in South Dakota Is Spearfish River

When it comes to fishing in South Dakota, there is one region that is difficult to beat—the Spearfish River flowing through the Spearfish Canyon. The Mount Rushmore State, in my opinion, simply doesn't get enough love. Sure, we have a small handful of tourists every year, but when it comes to the most-visited places, we're definitely not one of 'em. This is unfortunate, though, because there's so much to love about this incredible state, especially if you're a fan of exploration, watersports, and fishing.

Why the Spearfish River Is One of the Best Fishing Spots in South Dakota

The entire Spearfish Canyon region is absolutely beautiful. But, it's not just the beauty that makes this area a gem for outdoor enthusiasts—it's the fishing. The Spearfish River is one of the best fishing spots in South Dakota, and when I say the fishing is good, I mean it's good.

The water is pristine and always crystal-clear; the kind of clean, wild resources you'd expect from the rolling wonder of the Black Hills. Spearfish Creek even holds the honor of being the second-largest stream in the Black Hills.

What You Can Catch in the Spearfish River

Different locations on the river lead to different types of fish. For example, within Spearfish Canyon, trout are common, including brown trout and rainbow trout. Upstream, winding through the limestone cliffs, trout are even more plentiful. Yellow perch is another fish commonly caught here. How lucky we are to be situated right on a plentiful river that provides us with such delicious catches?

If you're wondering which creek takes first place over Spearfish in terms of size, that title belongs to the beautiful Crow Creek, which isn't terribly far from here.

Why This Underrated River is Worth the Trip

A day trip to Spearfish Canyon is special enough. Throw some fishing in and you've got yourself a perfect day out. Keep in mind, however, that to fish, you'll need to procure a license from Walmart, the Spearfish Canyon Lodge, and the Iron Creek Lake Store.

Of course, fishing isn’t the only thing you can do in South Dakota’s Spearfish Canyon. While we always recommend taking the scenic drive along the Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway (US Highway 14A), you can also chase some waterfalls, go for a hike, or even enjoy some rock climbing. Bridal Veil Falls is a beautiful waterfall that’s accessible right from the road, and the nearby challenging 76 Trail offers gorgeous views. Spring, summer, and early fall are the best times to visit this region of South Dakota, not only because of the beauty in the area but also for the fishing.
