There is no doubt that one of the most iconic and bucket-list-worthy destinations in South Dakota is Badlands National Park. This incredible destination has attracted people from around the world due to its unique geology, rich fossil beds, wildlife, and more. While there are several things to do at Badlands National Park, one of our favorites is going on a hike, and there’s nothing quite like the short-and-sweet Window Trail. This hike is less than 0.5 miles, easy, and scenic every step of the way. It’s a journey that we recommend every individual takes at least once in their lifetime.
When you are looking for things to do in Badlands National Park, I could create an itinerary that would keep you busy all day long. On this list, you’d certainly find a hike along the Window Trail. This is one of the shorter trails in the national park, but it’s also one of the most popular. It's perfect for a quick afternoon adventure.
The Window Trail features a lollipop design. There is a short loop as well as an out-and-back portion. In total, the hike is only 0.3 miles, so it won’t take up too much of your day, and even young feet won’t feel too tired.
Plus, the trail is easy and flat. There is little elevation gain and the trail features a wooden boardwalk, making it wheelchair and stroller accessible. This is a path that every member of the family can enjoy.
And despite being a short journey, it’s certainly not lacking incredible scenery. This trail leads you to a natural window in the Badlands Wall. As you walk to this viewpoint, you’ll get up close to the unique formations that this area is known for, which are quite remarkable. In fact, you may feel like you are on another planet. As the trail weaves you through the formations, you’ll feel far away from the worries and stresses of daily life. This is a great place to take a break from reality.
Although, you likely won’t be alone on this journey. This trail is quite popular, and you will likely share the boardwalk with others. Be kind and respectful as you hike. Everyone deserves a wonderful experience on this South Dakota trail.
Once you reach the window at the Badlands Wall, get ready to be wowed. This natural window provides a view of a majestic eroded canyon. Don’t be surprised if you have to pick your jaw off the floor when you see it for the first time — it’s awe-inspiring. It's wonderful that this gem is found in our great state.
Spend some time enjoying the views before you turn around and head back to your vehicle. This is a sight you won’t want to forget.
