South Dakota has some world-famous attractions. Folks come from all over to marvel at Mount Rushmore, and the tiny town of Sturgis fills with bikers during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. South Dakotans know that not all our best attractions are famous...some of the best are hidden gems, tucked away in the state's most beautiful scenery. Here's one spot you should definitely go...but shhhh...don't tell the tourists!
You'll find Big Sioux Recreation Area just east of Sioux Falls, near I-90 in Brandon. It's one of South Dakota's prettiest spots.
The Big Sioux River winds right through this recreation area. It's perfect for fishing, and you can even check out fishing poles to use while you're here.
And of course, a day in a canoe on the river is a day well spent.
You'll want to see the suspension bridge over Big Sioux River. Take the Prairie Vista Trail, which makes a large loop through the area and across the river.
The Valley of the Giants trail is another hiking trail here. It's about two miles long.
Ride your bike or take a stroll on the paved, 2.5-mile trail.
Brush up your archery skills on the one mile-long Archery Trail. You'll find 14 stop and shoot points to practice your accuracy.
Check out the historic cabin. It once belonged to Ole Bergeson, who homesteaded here in the 1860s.
Play a round of disc golf on the 18-hole course. The course takes you through the trees and lets you enjoy some of the scenic beauty here.
Watch for wildlife here! It's abundant.
Turn the kids loose on the playground to burn off a little energy.
There's plenty of open space to have a good time and bond with family and friends.
This is the perfect spot for a picnic - plenty of shade, grass and tables.
As the day winds down, you'll wish you could stay. And, you can! The park has 50 campsites and three cozy cabins.
