With A Mini Golf Course, Playground, And Creekside Trail, This South Carolina Park Is The Ultimate Family Destination
Greenville's McPherson Park offers a variety of family-friendly activities, including a historic mini-golf course and scenic walking trails.
If you've been hearing about Greenville and thinking about a visit, you're among good company. In 2021, Greenville ranked along with Charleston in the top five small cities in the country in a Conde Nast reader poll. Those familiar with the city aren't surprised. Its award-winning downtown with Falls Park as the centerpiece is stunning, providing the type of first impression you want visitors to your city to have. And from there, you'll find an abundance of beautiful sights to see and fun things to do in Greenville. Just for starters, there are 10 parks in the City of Greenville park system, one that families especially will enjoy.
Located on East Park Avenue in Greenville's East Park Historic District, McPherson Park is the city's oldest park and was added to the National Register of Historic Places on October 4, 2005.
A branch of Richland Creek runs through McPherson Park, which started out in 1884 as a very small two-and-a-half acre area that had been sold to the city for use as a "place of resort." The park was later expanded to a total of 20 acres, but about half of it was lost when Academy Street was lengthened in the 1960s. Today, it's 12.5 acres in size.
A walking trail loops around the park area with the creek running through the middle of the loop, which is 0.7 miles in length and an easy walk.
McPherson Park became a place in the city for Sunday School outings, cottonmill picnics, weekly concerts, and at one point, there was a makeshift zoo there. Along the way, a mini-golf course was added and has been enjoyed through the years by the community.
The park underwent a major restoration project in 2018, and the mini-golf course was replaced with a new one at that time.
The City of Greenville enlisted an engineering firm and Harris Miniature Golf to assist with site design and floodplain permitting.
It's an 18-hole course and free to play, but you'll need to bring your own putters and balls for this fun activity.
Other fun things for families to do at McPherson Park include a game of tennis on the tennis courts, spending some time at the playground area ...
... and having a picnic lunch at the picnic tables beneath a shelter.
There also are restrooms as well as a bandstand, which along with the shelter is available for rental.
McPherson Park is just one of many fun things to do in Greenville. Have you ever visited? Need golf clubs for the kids? Grab this deluxe set and get on over to McPherson Park for an afternoon of fun.
