Most People Don’t Know This Enchanting Oasis In South Carolina Even Exists

Pearl Fryar Topiary Garden in Bishopville, South Carolina, is a world-renowned hidden gem known for its unique topiary art and inspiring message of love, peace, and goodwill.

With its gorgeous coastline, mesmerizing waterfalls, and forested trails, South Carolina is not lacking in the natural wonders department. And yet, we are continuously surprised by the sheer volume of hidden treasures just waiting to be discovered. For most, Pearl's Topiary Garden remains something of a hidden gem. This world-renowned backyard garden, tucked away in the town of Bishopville, has a heartwarming message behind it.

The Pearl Fryar Topiary Garden is located at 145 Broad Acres Road, Bishopville, SC, 29010

The man behind this masterpiece is Pearl Fryar himself, who started the garden in 1981 with the modest goal of winning Yard of the Month from his local garden club.

Pearl wanted to win this title to prove that he could maintain his yard, despite the stereotypes held by some that he wouldn’t maintain it to the neighborhood’s standing.

After winning Yard of the Month, Pearl corrected this wrongful stereotype and continues to maintain one of the most breathtaking backyards in the country.

His garden is home to over 300 plants, most of which were discarded by the local nursery and have since been wonderfully repurposed.

Perhaps one of the most magical aspects of Pearl’s Garden is the loving way it has been maintained: no chemicals, no obsessive watering, no sprays. He simply tends to what nature provides organically.

After opening to the public, his yard welcomes over 10,000 visitors each year from all over the world.

Pearl explains the reason why he believes so many are drawn to his garden: "You very seldom see something start out so simple and make an impact that this garden has made."

As you leave the garden, you’ll notice the words "Love, Peace, and Goodwill" cut into the lawn as a reminder of what the garden stands for.

The garden is not only breathtaking, but the message behind it is both moving and inspirational.
