The Breathtaking South Carolina Hike That Glows Gold Once A Year

There's one hike in the Palmetto State that takes you so far above the world you'll want to return again and again, regardless of the effort it takes to get there. This time last year, the Table Rock Trail was closed during one of the worst fires in the history of the area. But this year, you can ascend to the summit and take in the glorious colors of autumn on this breathtaking hike in South Carolina that glows gold once a year.

Table Rock State Park is easy on the eyes year-round. But in the fall season it comes alive with bright colors, particularly gold.

A hike to the top of this enormous landmark is an accomplishment you won't soon forget. The trail is strenuous, with an elevation gain of nearly 2,500 feet over 3.6 miles. Overall the trail is 7.2 miles out and back. And it's a hike you won't soon forget!

Especially in the autumn, the Table Rock Trail takes on a brassy gold tone smattered with the occasional splash of rust as you make your way over some beautiful terrain including waterfalls.

Even the sediment in one of the waterfalls at Table Rock State Park appears a golden yellow!

Miraculously, after the last leaf has fallen, the remaining brush and grass turns a muted golden hue. So even if you miss the leaves changing colors you can still enjoy the golden colors of autumn.

Bring plenty of water and allow for an entire day to make the trip to the summit. For added inspiration, you'll get some peeks at it here and there from the lower elevations.

But perhaps the best views of all are from the top of Table Rock. From here, it's easy to see why the Native Americans who first settled here believed the Gods dined on this rock with Heavenly views that seem to go on forever. Pack a picnic of your own and dine like those ancient Gods right on the top of this golden autumn paradise in the Palmetto State.

The trailhead for the Table Rock Trail can be accessed from the parking area at the visitor's center at Table Rock State Park. The park charges a minimal entrance fee. Table Rock State Park is located just off the Cherokee Foothills Scenic Highway (SC-11) at 158 E Ellison Ln., Pickens, SC 29671.
