Going to the beach is a popular and favorite past-time for South Carolinians. And, with so many beaches sometimes it is hard to choose where to go or you run into the problem of getting into a rut and go to the same beach over and over again until you believe that is the only beach there is. That's where I come to the rescue. I have compiled a 'best of the best' beach list for you guys; a list of beaches that will knock your socks off. I also took into consideration parents with children, couples, those of us who want a rarely used beach, and those of us who don't mind and actually want the crowd. Here are the 14 most beautiful beaches in South Carolina:
1. Kiawah Island
This island has been named the second most romantic beach in America. So, grab your partner and take them to the beach - island style!
2. Isle of Palms/Front Beach
A great family beach. There are a load of activities to do in the area and some awesome restaurants as well.
3. Folly Beach
This beach is usually referred to as "The edge of America" by the locals. This is definitely a family-friendly atmosphere and for all of you surfers out there...bring your surfboard!
4. Chaplin Beach, Hilton Head
Access to this beach is through Chaplin Community Park. This is another family-friendly area and beach. It provides loads of activities as well as a dog-friendly park so you don't have to leave your pet behind. There is even a place to rent beach chairs and umbrellas if you need them.
5. Coligny Beach, Hilton Head
This beach is for the ones who don't mind the crowd. It gets pretty busy in the summer, but the beach is beautiful and it is safe for the children. There are excellent restaurants near by and shopping when you are tired of the sand, surf, and sun.
6. Sullivan's Island
Want a getaway from the crowds? Looking for a bit of space? Then this is the beach for you. It is a beautiful sandy beach with minimal rocks so you won't hurt your feet. Excellent restaurants nearby as well. Hey, you can try Poe's Tavern while you are in the area and get one of those amazing burgers I wrote about!
7. Edisto Beach
This is a nice beach with a playground for children. However, be aware that there is a line of shell that separates you from the beach so be careful and where some sort of beach shoes or it is possible to cut your feet. There is a really nice gift shop just down the beach as well as a really good restaurant. This was my mom's favorite beach and we would go there at least twice a summer. I miss that.
8. Boneyard Beach
This beach is definitely a sight to behold. I would say that it is more for adults and teenagers. You have to take a ferry to get there, but it is well worth it.
9. Hunting Island State Park
This is one of the most popular beaches here in South Carolina. Not only does it have pristine white sandy beaches, but the park also holds the only lighthouse open to the public.
10. Huntington Island State Park
Definitely a family-friendly spot with loads of activities around the bend not to mention the beautiful beach area.
11. Fripp Island
This one is definitely a couple's kind of getaway. Although a popular vacationing spot, it is very quiet and the best way to get around the small island is on a golf cart of bicycle.
12. Dewees Island
Although, this is a breathtaking beach, you are going to find it difficult to enter. It is all privately owned and therefore you have to request information on accommodations. There is a resort there and you can find more information here.
13. Pawley's Island
Close enough to Myrtle Beach, but just far enough away if you don't like the crowding of Myrtle Beach.
14. Myrtle Beach
A lot of locals tend to either have one or two reactions to just the name of this beach. They are either not going there...ever or they love it. Myrtle Beach is a beautiful beach, but it does tend to get crowded. However, the attractions surrounding the beach will keep you busy for days!
If you haven't been to any of these beaches, go try it out. You never know if you will like it until you try it. So, get out that swimsuit, bring along the sunscreen, and go have some fun in the sun! South Carolina's beaches are absolutely stunning!
