Central Falls in Rhode Island is a highly walkable town with rich historical sites and scenic views along the Blackstone River.
Rhode Island often requires a bit more driving than you would expect from the smallest state. And there's nothing wrong with that; there is a lot to be seen by car or public transportation that should not be missed. However, sometimes you want to discover a new place on foot. So, I am happy that we have towns like Warren and Bristol with charming, pedestrian-friendly Main Streets with something to see around every corner.

The good news is, we have many more destinations in Rhode Island offering the same experience. One in particular is Central Falls in the lower Blackstone River Valley. With its historical homes, impressive architecture, and scenic water views, this walkable town in Rhode Island is ideal for a day trip or a weekend getaway. It’s the kind of place that beckons your full attention — well, at least in my opinion.
Dive Into the History of Central Falls

Once known as the "City with a Bright Future," Central Falls began its journey during the early Industrial Revolution. Officially incorporated in 1895, the city grew into a bustling metropolis with immigrants working in the mills and factories. As a result of the boom, several mills along with the Blackstone River became the foundation of the city. Today, those mills make up Central Falls Mill Historic District, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.
Over the years, the city faced several challenges but has since reintroduced itself with a new motto, “Diversity That Inspires,” to recognize its multicultural and diverse population. Remaining densely populated with about 23,000 residents, Central Falls has a vibrant culture and lively walkable streets that reflect its industrial past. If you’re a history buff like me, chances are, you’ll enjoy strolling through this historic town in Rhode Island.
Things to Do and See in Central Falls

The average walkability score for towns and cities in Rhode Island is only 59. I love that Central Falls blows this score out of the water with an 84. And there is a lot to discover around every corner, including historic mill buildings, neighborhood bakeries, small markets, and community parks.
This town is situated along the Blackstone River and features many historic homes and buildings from the 19th and 20th centuries. They include the Old Rail Station, which is now covered with graffiti but still holds onto a lot of its old nobility. There is a good amount of red brick architecture to be observed in buildings like the Old Broad Street Fire Station. And City Hall is a stunning example of Old-World building techniques as well. After decades, the architecture still makes a bold statement, even with nature reclaiming some of the iconic relics. These historical landmarks in Rhode Island are frozen in time, but still quite stunning.
Don't leave without stopping by the Adams Public Library to admire the Greek Revival Architecture. About a mile away in the neighboring town of Pawtucket, you'll also want to carve out time to see Pawtucket Falls on the Blackstone River. Native Americans used the area for travel, and later, the falls became the site of America’s first successful water-powered cotton mill.
