These Rhode Island Bluffs Are The Coolest Thing You’ll Ever See For Free
Mohegan Bluffs on Block Island in Rhode Island offers stunning views and a challenging hike, making it a must-visit natural wonder.
Natural beauty is a given just about everywhere we go in Rhode Island - from the sandy beaches to the forested hiking trails. However, to drink in some of the most jaw-dropping views in the state, you'll definitely need a bit of stamina and a sense of adventure. Mohegan Bluffs on Block Island in Rhode Island offer some of the most amazing views you'll find anywhere in the state - and far beyond - and they're well worth a spot on the ol' bucket list.
Hop aboard one of the ferries to Block Island for a journey to arguably one of the most beautiful places in the state - Mohegan Bluffs.
Even before you arrive on Block Island, you'll be treated to sensational views of the Atlantic and the mainland as the ferry inches closer and closer to the island's shore.
Towering 200 feet above the ocean, the chiseled bluffs draw visitors from all over Rhode Island and beyond, and it's easy to see why. The views are absolutely incredible.
This Rhode Island natural wonder takes its name from a battle in 1590 that pitted the Mohegan tribe against the native Manisseans. The Manissesans claimed victory, which led to the deaths of 40 Mohegan, all of whom were said to have fallen over the cliffs.
Marvel at the sweeping views from atop the bluffs. If you're up for it, head down the staircase, comprised of 141 stairs, that leads to the shore.
If you're not sure where to find the stairs, look for the nearby plaque that shares the bluff's history.
Just remember that you'll have to climb back up those stairs when you're done visiting. The trek can be rough, so be prepared for the challenge.
Although it tallies less than a mile, the Mohegan Bluffs Trail scores a moderate rating and will take you on a rocky path along the beach.
The trail meanders between the ocean and the bluffs. Some hikers consider it more of a scramble along the beach and even though the mileage is short, you'll need at least a few hours to complete it.
You definitely don't want to wear flip-flops for this one. Your best bet is to slip on a pair of sturdy hiking boots.
Because you'll be on the beach, be prepared for full-on sunshine. Bring plenty of bottled water, snacks, and sunscreen.
If you're visiting during the summer, you might want to cool off in the ocean. Keep an eye out, too, for whales.
Whether you just take the stairs to the ocean or you head out on the hike, you're in for a one-of-a-kind adventure. Don't forget to bring your camera. You'll find endless opportunities for Mohegan Bluffs on Block Island photos.
