Rhode Island is a unique place with a whole lot of character. The people of the nation's smallest state tend to be some of the most memorable around and there are a lot of things that make them stand out. The people are so different even, that they have developed a pretty unique language. Here are 10 words that might be commonly used elsewhere, but won't make a whole lot of sense to a Rhode Islander.

1. Hoagie

Rhode Islanders prefer the term grinders and you can find an amazing Italian Grinder just about anywhere.

2. Buggy

You'll get some strange looks if you call a shopping carriage a buggy in this small state.

3. Pop

Pop doesn't exist! It's soda in the 401.

4. Basement

Who has a basement? We know only cellars here, but it might sound more like "sell-uhh"

5. Drinking fountain

Who needs a drinking fountain when you have a bubblah?

6. Milk shake

Milk shakes are commonly referred to as cabinets in Little Rhody.

7. Roundabout

Traffic circles and roundabouts are called rotaries in the Ocean State.

8. Turn signal

"That guy didn't use his blinkah."

9. Remote

You won't hear this word too much in Rhode Island, but you might hear, "Where'd you put the clickah?"

10. Very

Alright, we know what very means, but it's wicked unlikely that we'll use the word.
