There is no need to head to the coast when you want to hang out at the beach. Instead, take the short drive to Sauvie Island to enjoy the best beaches around all stacked in a row next to each other on a vast strip of land at the end of the road.
Cross the Sauvie Island Bridge and you are transported to a different place entirely.
Surrounded by nature and farmland, you will feel a million miles away from it all.
North Unit, Walton, Collins, and Warrior Point Beaches are all right here along the island's north-east coast along the Columbia River.
They are all picturesque, sandy, and have plenty of spots to catch some shade on a hot day.
When the temperature rises in the city, you can expect to see plenty of people cooling off here, flying kites, fishing, boating, and just having fun in the water.
The first public beach you will cross is Walton Beach, a very popular hangout on hot days, known for its sandy beach, easy access, and shallow water. You can expect crowds here on hot days; be sure to get here early if this is your destination.
Neighboring Walton Beach is Collins Beach, a clothing-optional beach. Further on the road north, are two quieter beaches: North Unit and Warrior Point.
North Unit is the final stop on the long dirt Reeder Road. If you want to go to Warrior Point, you will have to boat or take the 3.5-mile hike. Your reward, however, is a near-private beach to enjoy all to yourself.
Sauvie Island is hands-down one of the best beach areas around with its sandy shores and gentle currents. When the weather heats up, grab a picnic and head to this local gem for a lovely day in the sun.
You will need a parking pass to visit the Sauvie Island beaches. A day pass is $10 or you can purchase an annual pass for $30. Purchase a pass at the general store at the base of the bridge.
