The Underrated Beach With The Most Pristine Sand Near Pittsburgh
What's the first place that comes to mind when you hear the word beach? Probably not Pittsburgh or Western Pennsylvania, right? While we might not be within easy driving distance of the ocean, we are pretty fortunate to have numerous beaches within reach. Laurel Hill State Park near Pittsburgh, for example, boasts a gorgeous beach with some of the most pristine sand in the area.
Nestled in the Laurel Highlands in Somerset, Laurel Hill State Park is just over an hour's drive from downtown Pittsburgh. However, when you arrive, you'll feel millions of miles away...
...especially when your gaze first settles on the sandy beach that leads into the 63-acre Laurel Hill Lake, a popular summer destination.
Stretching 1,200 feet, the pristine sand beach beckons sunbathers and swimmers from the end of May to the beginning of September each year.
Pitch your umbrella; dig your feet into the soft sand, and soak up the sun, or spend the day lounging in the cool lake water. The beach is wheelchair accessible, with both an ADA-accessible ramp into the water and ADA-accessible restrooms.
When you're thirsty or hungry, stop by the concession stand that offers a delicious menu from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
Laurel Hill Lake is also popular with kayakers and boaters, and...
...the kiddos can play at the playground that's surrounded by pristine white sand.
You might also want to explore the park on some of its 15 miles of hiking trails; have a picnic in one of the picnic areas, or spend a few nights camping.
