Escape to Colonel Denning State Park in Newville, Pennsylvania, for a relaxing beach day at Doubling Gap Lake.
Scorching summer days mean one thing in Pennsylvania. We've got a decision to make. Do we curl up in the cozy A/C, or do we face that heat head-on with a day at our favorite waterpark, community pool, or even a beach? If you're all about a leisurely beach day, escape to this hidden beach in Newville, Pennsylvania.
Treat yourself to an old-fashioned beach day at Colonel Denning State Park, a snug 273-acre park that's predominately wooded.
The beach is open annually from the end of May until the middle of September.
Perhaps the highlight of this secluded state park, the cozy sandy beach leads into Doubling Gap Lake, a 3.5-acre lake that's an idyllic spot for cooling off on a hot summer day.
Only kayaks and canoes are permitted on the lake, if you prefer exploring.
Bring your favorite beach chair, towel, or umbrella, and claim your spot on the sandy shore, flanked by a lush forested area.
Don't forget your pail and shovel. This Pennsylvania beach was made for building sandcastles.
The beach is smoke-free, although you'll find smoking areas nearby.
All that building, swimming, and sunbathing can create a mighty appetite. Bring everything you need for a picnic, under the protective shade of the trees.
Spend some time exploring the picturesque state park on one of the two scenic trails.
Although Colonel Denning State Park is a must-visit during the summer months, be sure to stop by after it snows, too. Cross-country skiing and ice skating are both popular wintertime activities.
Pitch a tent or pull up your RV in one of the 49 sites, each with a fire ring and a picnic table, in the campground.
