We're pretty lucky as Pittsburghers to live in or near a thriving city but to always be within easy driving distance of a lush green space. Allegheny County, in fact, boasts nine regional parks. Harrison Hills Park in Pittsburgh, a hidden gem snuggled along the Allegheny River, is just one of those parks that provides a picture-perfect backdrop for a day outdoors.
You'll have plenty of beautiful outdoor space - 500 acres, to be exact - to explore when you visit Harrison Hills Park in Pittsburgh. It's a must-visit destination in each season.
Spring means the blossoming of colorful flowers, and there are no shortage of wildflowers that grow on the lush land at the park. Some of the more than two dozens wildflowers you might see include bluebells, daisies, and swamp milkweek.
Speaking of swamps, Harrison Hills Park is home to wetlands. Stroll along the wooden boardwalk that hugs the wetlands and stop to read the placard to learn more.
If it's breathtaking views you're after, you will find an abundance of them. Head to the scenic overlook, for example, where you'll be treated to sweeping views of...
...the Allegheny River, with the rolling hills and trees of Western Pennsylvania in the background.
Wear comfy hiking boots or shoes if you're up for hiking some of the 14 miles of hiking trails. The paved Watts Meadow Trail is wheelchair accessible.
Each of the trails is rated from easy to difficult. The Rachel Carson Trail is the only non-loop trail in the park, which is also popular with horseback riders, mountain bikers, and cross-country skiers.
Bring your binoculars if you're in the mood for a bit of wildlife watching, another popular activity at the park. You might even spot a bald eagle, if you're lucky.
Harrison Hills Park also hosts events and programs throughout the year, including hikes that are lead by seasoned park rangers.
