It’s An Epic Adventure Hiking To A Trailside Pub In Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania was practically made for hiking, and there's a trail for all of us, (well, many of us), no matter our skill level. We can hike to waterfalls, alongside lakes, and to breathtaking scenic bluffs. Some trails, such as the Great Allegheny Passage, even meander through small towns, where you'll uncover some pretty tasty hidden gems. Like this trailside restaurant in West Newton, Pennsylvania.
Perhaps one of the most epic trails in Pennsylvania, the Great Allegheny Passage (GAP) wanders 150 miles from Pittsburgh to Cumberland, Maryland, and boasts some of the area's most breathtaking natural beauty, including mountains, valleys, and rivers.
The Great Allegheny Passage has 18 trailheads, making it easy to complete the trail at your own pace.
The GAP passes through a dozen trail towns, including West Newton, a charming small town just about 25 miles from Pittsburgh and home to a popular trailside restaurant.
The Trailside sits right at mile marker 114.1 on the GAP, so whether you're hiking the entire trail or just tackling it in sections, take a break to refuel, relax, and enjoy a delicious meal when you arrive in West Newton.
A seat on the deck promises views of the Youghiogheny River and the GAP, where you can watch as hikers and bikers pass by.
Or pull up a stool at the bar - there are TVs to catch the big games - or grab a table in the indoor dining area. If you're craving a cold brew, you've got 20 on draft from which to choose.
The menu's chock-full of American favorites, starting with the appetizers. If you can't decide which appetizer, go for the sampler that features three of five (you choose) classics - fries, provolone sticks, onion rings, jalapeno poppers, and zucchini planks.
A wood-fired crust pizza, paired with a salad or wings, just might be that extra push you need for your next leg of the journey.
With more than a dozen burgers and handhelds offered, you have a mighty tough choice to make. But if you're not really feeling like a burger or a wrap, why not treat yourself to a hearty entree?
Butterfly shrimp, honey bourbon chicken, and pan-seared salmon all come with two sides, promising to leave you stuffed and happy.
