You’ll Enjoy Ocean Views For Miles From Oregon’s Scenic Neahkahnie Mountain Overlook

The views along Oregon's 363 miles of coastline can be downright stunning, but there's one that's particularly compelling. The Neahkahnie Mountain Overlook is worthy of a stop as you're driving along Highway 101, and if you have the time and inclination, you can also take a hike to the mountain's summit for an even better view.

For one of the coast's best views, pull off at the Neahkahnie Viewpoint on Highway 101. You'll find it just north of Manzanita.

This main viewpoint has plenty of parking spaces, along with some informational signs that will tell you all about Neahkahnie Mountain and some of her history and legends.

You'll find a few other pullouts as you continue to drive north. Stop at each one for a unique perspective along the way.

You don't have to wander far from your car to enjoy some stunning views...

...but if you're willing to do a bit of hiking, you'll be rewarded with an even more jaw-dropping vista.

Neahkahnie Mountain is part of Oswald West State Park, which offers several hiking trails that take you up onto the mountain. The South Mountain Trail is just 2.6 miles out-and-back, and it's considered moderately difficult due to an 889-foot elevation change.

The trail takes you deep into a lush, temperate rainforest, with moss-covered trees and huge ferns. You'll want to make sure you're wearing sturdy shoes for this hike; there are plenty of tree roots, rocks, and steep spots to navigate.

As you near the summit of the mountain, you'll scramble up some boulders to the top. That final push is worth the effort...

...for this reward! It goes without saying that toting along your camera on this hike is a must. You can see for miles up here.
