The Neahkahnie Trail Takes You To The Highest Point On The Oregon Coast

Neahkahnie Mountain offers breathtaking views from its summit, accessible via a moderate 2.7-mile trail in Oswald West State Park.

One of the most stunning views in the Beaver State is found on the Northern Oregon Coast Range - the highest point on the coast. At 1,683 feet, this mountain is so spectacular that the native people in this region graced it with its name, "Neahkahnie," which means "place of supreme deity." Get a look at this view, and you'll agree that it's a view worthy of gods.

Two trails take you to the top of Neahkahnie Mountain, but the south trail is the shorter of the two. This trail is 2.7 miles out and back, with an elevation climb of 900 feet.

You'll find the Neahkahnie Mountain Trail inside Oswald West State Park.

This trail is rated as moderate, and definitely has some steep spots that can be tricky for some hikers to navigate. Make sure to wear a pair of sturdy hiking shoes, and bring along some hiking poles.

The forested trail is shady and cool, but many spots have exposed roots, so watch your step!

Watch for wildflowers during summer months. Their vibrant blooms add pretty splashes of color to this adventure.

Though the climb is mostly gradual, you'll be gaining quite a bit of elevation, so don't hesitate to sit and take a break occasionally.

You'll soon start to glimpse views through the trees...

...and before long, you'll be treated to a view of the coastline far below.

Continue to make your way to the very top to be treated to a view unlike any other on the coast.

You can see why this stunning sight is considered worthy of gods, can't you? On a clear day, it's absolutely breathtaking from your summit perch at nearly 1,700 feet.

This trail is popular, especially on weekends during summer months, so don't expect to have it to yourself. Remember to be mindful of others around you, stay on the dedicated trail, and take all your trash with you after you soak in this scenery.
