Some of Oregon's hidden gems are less crowded for a reason - they're in remote places that require some patience and navigation skills to reach. Hart Mountain Hot Springs is one of those spots. It's located in the eastern part of the state, and it's two hours from the nearest town. If you're looking for a soaking spot that you'll likely have all to yourself, make plans to visit this amazing hot springs in Oregon!
If you're up for an all-day adventure to a beautiful, remote spot, head to Hart Mountain Hot Springs (aka Antelope Springs).
You'll find it in the Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge in eastern Oregon. The nearest town is Plush, which is 25 miles away, and you'll travel on a dirt road to reach the springs, so the drive takes much longer than you might expect. Make sure you have plenty of gas and water, and download maps before you head out - you probably won't have cell service out there.
This remote part of the state is beautiful, and doesn't get many visitors. It's the perfect place to find some quiet solitude.
There might not be many people around in this vast landscape, but you'll likely encounter all kinds of wildlife. Herds of pronghorn are common in this refuge, and you might also see bighorn sheep, pika, and sage grouse. Keep an eye out for rattlesnakes, too.
The hot springs area is somewhat developed; watch for the stone wall that surrounds the main spring.
The enclosed area includes some wooden benches and a hot spring pool with a ladder.
The water bubbles up from the spring below at temperates of 100-105 degrees Fahrenheit. The bottom of the pool is slippery with moss, so you might want to wear a pair of water shoes or flip flops during your soak.
Odds are pretty good that you'll have this place to yourself, especially if you visit on a weekday.
There's a second, undeveloped hot spring just a few feet away, and you'll want to have a soak in it, too! It's a little bit warmer than the first.
These hot springs are relaxing year-round. During summer months you'll want to bring along some mosquito repellent.
Since this place is so remote, you might want to plan for an overnight stay. There are 30 campsites here. They're rustic, with vault toilets and no other services.
The hot springs are free to visit, and they're clothing-optional. Make sure to pack out anything you pack in with you to help keep this place pristine for future visitors.
