Oregon’s Most Underrated State Forest You Need to Visit

With tall trees, a flowing river, and a waterfall, this hiking trail has something for everything.

When I think of the bucket-list-worthy places in Oregon to visit, the Oregon Coast is the first to enter my mind. However, you cannot forget about our state’s dense, beautiful forests. The wooded areas that dot the Beaver State are magnificent and worthy of any day trip or getaway. LaPine State Park is one destination where you can truly bask in the beauty and solitude found within Oregon’s forests. And while there are several things to do at LaPine State Park, I recommend lacing up your hiking boots and tackling the Fall River Loop. It’s the perfect way to spend an afternoon outdoors.

LaPine State Park is one of our favorite state parks in Oregon, but it doesn’t get the attention it deserves. This park is an oasis in the desert, sitting along the Deschutes River. It is a state park with plenty to do, such as camping, hiking, and fishing. You can also visit “Big Tree,” Oregon’s largest ponderosa pine tree, which is believed to be more than 500 years old.

One of our favorite ways to admire the beauty and natural features in this state park is on the easy and scenic Fall River Loop. This hiking trail is approximately 4.5 miles and has little elevation gain, making it perfect for an easy afternoon adventure.

As you tackle this loop trail, you’ll enjoy many of the natural wonders that make this area of the state so memorable. Along your way, you'll walk next to the Deschutes River as well as the Fall River. You’ll also view Fall River Falls, a beautiful place to stop and relax. If you find yourself alone along this portion of the trail, I recommend being still, meditating, and listening to the sound of the tumbling water. This destination will rejuvenate your mind and body.

And while the water views are certainly breathtaking, I love walking through the forest. As you hike, you’ll venture through dense, wooded areas where you’ll feel cut off from the worries of the world.

Depending on when you tackle this trail, you may also enjoy pops of color from wildflowers. Fall is one of my favorite hiking seasons as the vibrant fall foliage transforms the trees, shrubs, and ground coverings.

As you walk, look for wildlife — you never know what you will see. Hikers and mountain bikers utilize this trail as well, so always pay attention to others who may be enjoying this breathtaking area of the Beaver State.

The Fall River Loop in LaPine State Park is beautiful, full of natural features, and a quiet place for an afternoon hike in Oregon’s forest. It’s the type of place where you can connect with nature and disconnect from the world. It’s truly an underrated gem.
