The Ancient Forest In Oregon That’s Right Out Of A Storybook

Beautiful forests cover more than 30 million acres of Oregon - that's nearly half of the state! We love to explore these gorgeous wild places, but there are some spots that are even more special than others. Here's an often-overlooked area near the Oregon Coast that features old-growth forest and offers a peaceful, quiet getaway.

The Drift Creek Wilderness is an area inside the Siuslaw National Forest, located between the coastal towns of Waldport and Newport.

The wilderness covers 5,798 acres of thick, old-growth forest.

You'll find huge Sitka spruce and Western hemlock here - some reaching as much as seven feet in diameter!

Because this area is as developed as other regions, many people don't bother to explore this quiet forest.

The forest receives up to 120 inches of rain every year, which keeps it lush and green. You'll find a thick carpet of moss, ferns, and other plant life that occasionall covers the trail.

The wilderness area has just two hiking trails and doesn't offer any amenities like restrooms or formal campgrounds. It's the perfect place to visit if you're looking for some true solitude.

While there is no campground, you are still allowed to camp here; you'll find some flat spots along Drift Creek. Just remember to pitch your tent at least 100 feet from the water and practice leave-no-trace camping principles.

Though there are only two trails, they are bursting with natural beauty. The Horse Creek Trail is a 6.9-mile out and back route.

The Harris Ranch Trail is every bit as beautiful. It's 5.5 miles out and back. Both trails are considered moderately difficult, as you'll climb approximately 1,450 feet along the way.

Drift Creek Wilderness is an ideal spot to explore if you want to get away from the crowds and enjoy an afternoon of peace, quiet and solitude.
