Oklahoma’s Most Underrated State Forest You Need to Visit
Ready for a weekend getaway jam-packed with adventure? Discover all the fun at Keystone Ancient Forest, an underrated state forest in Oklahoma.
It’s no secret that Oklahoma is often overlooked as a destination for outdoor adventure. But what folks fail to realize we have some incredible natural wonders and hidden gems. We don’t mind, though, as we’d rather have parks like Beavers Bend State Park and the Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge to ourselves. After all, they are always great destinations for a day trip.
Another underrated gem worth exploring is the Keystone Ancient Forest in Sand Springs. As one of the newest conservation areas in the state, not many people know about all the incredible things to do here. With overlooks, scenic trails, interesting rock formations, and more, this hidden gem state forest in Oklahoma is worth a day trip or, better yet, a weekend getaway.
Located just eight miles west of Tulsa, Sand Springs has everything we love about small towns in Oklahoma: great restaurants, friendly people, and tons of outdoor adventure. You may have been to the city to hike the trails at Keystone State Park, but did you know there is a forest just minutes away for you to explore?
That’s right, folks! Just five miles from the state park is Keystone Ancient Forest (KAF). With 1,300 acres of beautiful natural Oklahoma landscapes and cross-timber forests, KAF has plenty of adventure for the entire family. Unlike other parks and conservation areas, the forest is only open between Thursday and Sunday, so the scenic destination is excellent for a weekend day trip.
As the forest doesn't see many visitors, the trails are less crowded, and if you’re like me who prefers hiking in solitude, this is the place for you. Don’t expect to find recreational areas inside KAF; it’s strictly a nature preserve where you can hike and appreciate its beauty. And there is so much here to love.
There are over 12 miles of hiking trails for all types of adventurers. From easy kid-friendly trails to challenging backcountry treks and more, you can find it here. In addition, there are paved trails that are wheelchair accessible. The forest has something for everyone in the family to enjoy. Leashed pups are allowed but only on select trails on certain days of the month. It’s a good idea to download AllTrails+ to stay up to date on the rules of the forest.
One of the most popular trails here is the Keystone Ancient Forest Loop. This 6.4-mile loop trail is excellent no matter the time of year, but it comes alive and explodes beautifully during the fall season. Along the trail, you can spot wildlife, encounter unique rock formations, and witness sweeping views of Keystone Lake from an overlook.
Another trail system worth exploring is the Childers Trail, Frank Trail, and Wilson Trail Loop. A portion of the trail is ADA accessible, and it’s an easy trail with lots of adventure, so bring the kids along for this trek. Other trails feature waterfalls, flowing creeks, large boulders, and stunning views around every turn.
While all the trails have something that will inspire you, there are other aspects of the forest to love. For instance, the park has a butterfly savannah with over 50 species of fluttering beauties. Furthermore, there are signs and artwork scattered throughout the forest, so be sure to take some time to read them. Before you leave, don’t forget to stop by the visitor center to learn more about the forest and to see what cool gifts you can buy.
Camping isn’t allowed inside KAF, but don't worry; if you drive to Keystone State Park, you can spend the weekend there. Choose from primitive or RV sites, or if you want a more glamorous experience, yurts are available, too. Between the gorgeous landscapes and all the fun adventure, this hidden gem state forest in Oklahoma might just be our best-kept secret.
